Education CS Ogamba Forms Team To Address University Funding Model

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced new government initiatives on Sunday aimed at addressing concerns related to the New University Funding Model.

The CS revealed that the government will establish two comprehensive Working Committees, including student leaders, to assess the current implementation of the funding model in response to public outcry. These committees will also propose solutions to the challenges identified during their review.

The specific terms of reference for these committees will be outlined later this week, following consultations with student representatives. Ogamba emphasized that the committees will evaluate the effectiveness of the Means Testing Instrument in accurately reflecting students’ socio-economic conditions, as well as assess the efficiency of the appeals process, the cost of university programs, and the structure of student loans, including interest rates and repayment periods.

The CS explained that the formation of these time-bound committees aims to enhance efficiency and ensure meaningful student participation in decision-making processes. Despite previous forums and improvements made to the model based on stakeholder feedback, students have continued to demand greater involvement.

Ogamba noted that the push for increased student participation has been a central issue leading to planned demonstrations on September 9, 2024. In light of the government’s decision to form these committees, he urged student leaders to postpone the protests to facilitate an open and consultative process.

“The university leadership is requested to call off the demonstrations scheduled for September 9, 2024,” Ogamba said. “This will allow students to contribute effectively to discussions about their education and continue their studies without interruption.”
